A celebration in tile form. Every piece in this set is carved on a black face and filled with the colors of an ofrenda — marigold orange, papel-picado pink, turquoise, violet and lime — over a layered orange, purple and pink body.
The craks are sugar skulls, and no two are alike: each tile carries its own calavera above a red Chinese numeral. The bams are dripping votive candles. The dots are flower medallions ringed with tiny marigolds. The winds are lettered in white and framed by dancing calacas, confetti and candlelight, and the dragons bring a skeleton dog, a white coffin, and a skeleton cat. The joker is La Catrina herself, in a red hat with a rose and a sweep of purple hair.
Flower tiles carry a botanical illustration with a matching number and Chinese character, so the set plays for American and Chinese mahjong alike.
